K3B – Listen mp3 in cd players

Lets say that you have a lot of mp3 files and you would like to listen some of those mp3 files in a regular cd player by converting them to wave files. One way to do this with (K)ubuntu is that to download K3B application with a proper library. Generally when you install a linux distro that runs KDE environment as a desktop, this application is pre-installed. If not you can download K3B with the following command:

# sudo apt-get install k3b

The application itself will not support file conversion on the fly, so you need to install libk3b2-mp3 library:

#sudo apt-get install libk3b2-mp3
When you restart your K3B, you can start a new audio project and drag and drop your mp3’s into the project area. The files will be analyzed and converted to the proper format for burning the cd.

OpenSolaris Developer Preview

OpenSolaris Developer Preview is released today. This is very exciting news. This happens to be a live cd and you can get the single cd download from http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/resources/getit/

It is nice to see the folks over at OpenSolaris community came up with this preview after months of hard work. Kudos to the community.

I could not wait and downloaded the live cd and I must admit I am very impressed with it. I’ve been using solaris 10 for over a year now and I can say that I made a very good decision by ditching Windows. There are bunch of OpenSolaris based distros out there, namely Nexenta OS , Belenix, SchilliX, and among others.

The Preview distro comes with bunch of goodies:

ZFS as a filesystem, The eye candy Caiman Installer, Gnome 2.20 as the Desktop Environment. The distro also includes latest and greatest software such as Gimp 2.4, the usual suspects Firefox, Thunderbird, Evolution and so on.

Again, kudos to the community for their efforts.

Accident

Acc2 At first, I did not realize what was going on. The cars, and the trailer parked on the shoulder in the 86th mile marker on northbound of I-35 and then I saw some guy running towards us in the middle of the road. I still did not see the car that was flipped over with smoke on top of it. I was more paying attention to the guy who was running towards that red trailer. I did not see how the accident happen, but the rumor was that the car was actually coming from the Southbound of I-35 and somehow lost control, and dived into the ditch in the middle. After that, it found its way to our side and flipped. When we stopped, there was no smoke coming out of the car, but it really looked bad. So I stepped out of the car and looked back and I saw this huge line miles away.

Later I’ve learned that nobody was hurt, but there were still no news from a fire truck. While we were waiting there, we started hearing these cracking noises and inevitably smoke came out first and then the fire. I was literally thinking that the car was going to explode because of the gasoline that it was carrying for the speed cars at the back of it. The fire department finally showed up, and put out the fire. They cleaned up the road and finally we were on our way. Luckily no one was hurt. The car was tossed and it was completely black as we passed by.

Moved..

So,

Saturday, Sep 1. We are in the new place. I am so happy and excited. Internet/Cable/Phone is up and running already. Two men and a Truck , awesomely helpful. My better half’s sister, Aleta thank you, thank you, thank you for helping us move and organize.

In the following days, I will be unpacking, working, reading and more unpacking. Sylvia is getting used to the new place. At first, she seemed curious and uncomfortable, but now she is all over the place. She already figured out where the litter box is.

Unbeareble Lightness of Moving

Well, It is yet another time for moving. Boxes are laid out everywhere. My cat is playing hide and seek with me. She hides behind one of the boxes titled “Food, Kitchen”. She is naturally attracted to food, like all animals. Books are all around. I picked up one I’ve never read and directly put outside in the hallway where the tenants can take a look and if they like…….

When filling up one of those boxes, I managed to cut my toe. I usually make a big deal out of cuts. I am not sure why. It is unimportant and I know that.

What’s more important is that the excitement of moving into a new place. Not the action itself, but the aftermath of moving. A new place, a more comfortable  place, an environment I’d like to call home. It may sound like I don’t like the current place. On the contrary, I like it very much. So what’s the rush? Why not stay couple of more years? No, It is the time.

It is the time of moving, and moving on. I am hopeful, I am anxious, I am stressed. Unbearable lightness of being.

A little Sight Seeing

After an extremely boring drive, I arrived in Wichita, KS on a late Monday afternoon about a couple of weeks ago. The driving was so boring, at one point of time I lost the sense where I’ve been passing through or where I’ve been. I almost felt like Jim Morrison in the car when both sides of the road started look alike under 100 degree sun. I was even singing “This is the end” in my mind at that point.

After checking in the Hotel, the first thing I did was to take some good old cold shower. Then, I had to attend to the reception for a training that was going to take for four days. After meeting with some people, I decided to go upstairs to my room to get some rest so that I could have an easy day for the following morning. As usual, I could not sleep. It is always the first night that kills me at the hotel rooms. No matter what I do, it is always 3:00am or so in the morning I go to sleep.

One night, after the training was over, me and some several people from the training crew decided to go down-town Wichita. We called the cab and within 10-15 minutes we were at the entrance of a bar where the young people of Wichita hung around. At least this was what we were told by the cab driver. To my surprise the bar was actually neat, and it had some cool live music outdoors. The live music was cool until they started singing Duran Duran. I wished they did not do that.

So the evening came to an end after we checked out another bar. This bar could have been the bar the cab driver was referring to. It was very smoky and it had a darker mood.

Couple days later the training was over, and I had to drive to KC on that dull road. This time I felt happier because I was going back home.

American Gods

After a very hectic summer, I finally had some time to read books. The latest book I read was Neil Gaimen’s book titled American Gods. I really enjoyed reading this book from beginning to the end. You can find the details of the book here.

This is an interesting book which blends mythology, folklore, and modern life together. I recommend this book to anybody who is a fan of science fiction or literature. I will probably read rest of his books as the time goes on.

Can Do Attitude

I decided to have a “Can Do Attitude” lately. It is not like I can’t do things but what if this would be your default behavior for almost everything that needs to be accomplished. One of the positive outcome of this would probably be is to raise the bar for your accomplishments.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine a while ago. He was in Tibet searching for his “soul”. It was one of the most challenging things I did in life both physically and mentally he said. Apparently, him and his wife spent about several months in Tibet doing cross country walk. Most of the time, they camped out there and had a “simple” life during those months. When I asked “why” did you do this, he answered me just because he could do it. I knew that was going to be the typical answer of him, so I did not buy that. He explained later to me that he was looking to do something larger than life and see if he could survive without relying on the typical things we do in our daily life. Something like relying on technology, electricity and so on. He thought he could do it and got himself a big challenge. When he returned back home he almost had nothing to live with. All this happened before he joined one of the hi-tech companies located in Colorado.

So, there are people out there doing amazing things and succeeding by having a positive “can do attitude”. For people like him, sky is the limit.
